iBeacon best Mobile application using Gimbal, India

The problem statement

The predominant focus of enterprise has always been the right information at the right time to the customers. So long, it had been dependent on simple mechanism like pull notification, which had its short comings when it comes to locations and similar features. Enterprises then moved on to GPS and WIFI based technology which over came this shortcoming however they had their own limitations when it came to indoors.

This is where now enterprises are looking at beacon bush.  Beacon is an indoor location platform that broadcasts relevant information over Wi-Fi to in-range mobile devices. This technology is now transforming how enterprises communicate with people indoors.

Many businesses and developers are realizing the potential of this technology and are already taking advantage of it to deliver relevant and contextual interactions to their customers.  The versatility of the technology makes the uses of the beacons countless and up to the imagination of the business.

Bluetooth technology introduction

To circumvent the problems of indoor connectivity, enterprises are now Bluetooth technology to communicate with customers indoors through specific devices (Smart phones, etc…). And because of the many small, advanced and relatively cheap devices available and targeted by Bluetooth, it becomes the ideal communication interface for enterprises.

Bluetooth has been developed for low power when using GPS and its ability to give refined, fine grain control over Geo fencing implementations.

Bluetooth beacons are transmitters that use Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0 to broadcast signals that can be heard by compatible or smart devices.  These transmitters can be powered by batteries or a fixed power source such as a USB adapter. When a smart device is in a beacon’s proximity, the beacon will automatically recognize it and will be able to interact with that device.

Initial Analysis: 

The first analysis we did was to identify if there was their need to deploy iBeacon technology vs the business benefits. The business had customers that worked in a specific location was a strong point and since being retail we believed that thei customer will be hugely appreciative of the being able to receive information on the store, its offers and other useful information on their mobile phones making it a very personal experience.

 When we decided to go ahead, we know that the three elements are the key to to success:

      • Mobile application.

      • BLE Device Eco System

      • Physical placement. 

Mobile Application:

The application has two parts to it. The front end which observed the Bluetooth signals and the backend systems which triggers personalized location specific information. The application was designed to receive the signal and further decide on the proximity, based on the RSSI signals. The application would be configured using an available standard formula to determine the distance to the RSSI signals.

BLE Device Eco System

 We chose gimbal because of its wide availability and better support in comparison with the other providers

      • Gimbal beacons have their own Gimbal manager module to for Activation, Location configuration, visit analytics and coverage configuration.

      • Gimbal provides SDK for both iOS and Android platform.

      • They have two types of communication, - Messages in Gimbal communication manager will be pushed to mobile when they are in configured Gimbal range. And messages in Gimbal communication manager will be pushed to mobile instantly using Google Cloud Messenger (GCM).

      • They have an Analytics Section where we can view and export all beacon visit reports, communication event reports etc…

      • Ability to share Beacon places to other organizations for limited period or permanent sharing.

 The challenges   - Gimbal

To be able to activate and use only Gimbal Beacons in Gimbal manager console.

Changing location in Gimbal Manager console takes 24 hours to reflect in the application because of caching mechanism.

      • If we re-configure our Gimbal places range (RSSI levels) it does not reflect immediately in the application

      • Until the Production request form is submitted, it can only register a limited number of users per application.  If that limit is crossed, further registrations will fail.

Device placement in the physical location.

Where we plant the beacon is pertinent! When we plant Beacon devices in close proximity the signals overlap with each other and Customer might end up getting multiple information which could be misleading the user. So what we did was to calculate the customer’s proximity to a particular beacon by using the RSSI signal strength depending upon the proximity to the particular device and sent the appropriate message to the customer.

  • Distance is difficult to determine with accuracy. Beacons are inaccurate when translating close distances. When put closer than 12 feet together – a real possibility in a retail setting, for example – they interfered with each other, making it difficult to decipher one from the other.

  • Technology is out ahead of services needed to manage it. Very few managed service providers are offering services to set up beacons, resulting in the lack of consistent monitoring, measurement and management.

  • Barrage of signals could hinder adoption. Once there is wide adoption of beacon technology, consumers will experience a barrage of signals, similar to spamming, likely making it difficult to understand the content being shared.

  • Security management teams: The efficiency of teams that are responsible for patrolling buildings can be monitored using beacons. By placing beacons around such buildings, it can be ensured that each member of the team has covered the necessary checkpoints that need to be checked to ensure security. If that does not happen, a notification is triggered to the concerned department.

  • Set the employee attendance by iBeacon device. Like biometrics system.

  • Some employees will not allow to some restricted area.  If  they get in, sent the notification to our phone by iBeacon device.

  • Restrict area automatically camera off, silent mode. Go out beacon range automatically camera on.

  • Enterprise app that automatically monitors and polls for passengers who have check-in but not yet arrived at gate to determine their location within airport. This aid will help agents determine if seat should be forfeited or other actions (e.g paging) is best.
